Hometown Hero spreads laughter around the world with magic and comedy
Eric Thompson performs globally with his "Million Miles Million Smiles Tour"
WARREN, by Corban Baker
They say laughter is the best medicine. Well, Eric Thompson uses that idea when traveling the world to perform comedy for those who truly need a good laugh.
Eric is a Mahoning Valley native and has owned Satolli Carpet & Floor Covering in downtown Warren for the last 25 years. He's also been a magician and comedian for the last 38.
He got his start in the late '70s and for the past four decades, has performed magic and stand-up comedy all over the country and around the world.
"I do comedy and magic because it's fun," Eric said. "I love the laughter, I love sharing laughter and that joy. Bringing that joy to people, there aren't words to describe that."
Eric has performed at multiple venues with some of the biggest names in show business, but his true passion is performing for charities and nonprofit groups in our community.
Among many is the Rescue Mission in Youngstown during the holidays.
"That's really a tough time and that's a time that a lot of these people are overlooked," Eric said. "So we have food for them, we have beverages for them and we just have a great time, a good message, a lot of fun and laughter and maybe forget their problems for an hour."
He's also performed his award-winning show in over two dozen countries as part of his "Million Miles Million Smiles Tour." It's an idea he got after performing while in port from a cruise on vacation.
"The following year, instead of going on a cruise, I went to some of the poorest places in the world and used that talent to put shows on for missionaries, churches, schools," Eric said. "We performed for the people who are hungry, poor, oppressed, don't speak the language and the laughter was able to bridge that gap."
Eric continues his international tour every February, but still performs in the Mahoning Valley, too.
His greatest reward is bringing smiles and laughs to those who don't normally have much to smile or laugh about.
"You can't even describe it," he said. "To bring that joy to someone whose life really doesn't know joy, there aren't words for that. There's only emotion for that."
